As Certified Gasfitters, we are able to give great advice on the right appliance for your needs. If you are able to choose between natural gas and a meter or LPG bottles, they have different requirements with the gas code and different running costs.
Town gas (council gas supply) is available in many parts of Tauranga, Mt Maunganui and Papamoa. If natural gas is available in your street, you will need to at least be using it for water heating to make the line rental charges worthwhile. If you only wish to use a gas cooker or hob, twin 45kg LPG bottles would be your best alternative.
Often though, natural gas isn’t available and the only option is using the twin gas bottles. This is still far cheaper (lower running costs) than using straight electric power.
In many cases, your power costs can be cut in half by selecting gas for heating, cooking and hot water.
Comparative Estimates of Energy Costs
Circa 2020, the running costs of LPG gas is around $0.17 per kWh and natural gas is around $0.14 per kWh, compared to electricity at $0.29 per kWh (these are all gross averages compiled from multiple sources).
A new gas installation comes in at a lower price point compared to a solar hot water system or hot water heat pump and still offers good savings in terms of running costs.

Our gasfitting service utilises new efficient units like the Rinnai Infinity Califonts. These offer higher efficiencies of over 90% compared to the older style Califonts. The running costs of LPG gas is around 17c KWH, Natural gas is 9cents, compared to electricity at 27c KWH. This allows us to use the cleanest burning fossil fuel for direct use of energy, with many generations of fuel available.
