Otherwise known as tankless water heating systems online are gas calafonts that are installed to a property instead of the traditional electric hot water cylinder. Gas Calafonts have the advantage of not running out of hot water for busy homes; as long power and gas supply is available the system will continue to produce hot water.
As well as having limitless hot water, the system works on demand. That means if the home is unoccupied for long periods of time then there is no energy used to heat stored water. When there is no one at home during the day the system does not use any gas, unlike an electric hot water system that will continue to use power.
There are several reputable brands available such as the Rinnai Infinity (our favorite) and the Rheems Integrity.
Running costs on these systems is typically a lot lower than a straight electric HWC. We change over a lot of homes to these based on LPG supply with twin 45 kg Bottles. Where possible Natural Gas is also available. The running costs on gas are substantially lower. Our gasfitting service utilises new efficient units like the Rinnai Infinity Califonts. These offer higher efficiencies of over 90% compared to the older style Califonts. The running costs of LPG gas is around 17c KWH + gst, Natural Gas is 9 cents + gst, compared to electricity at 27c KWH + gst or more.
This allows us to use the cleanest burning fossil fuel for direct use of energy; with many generations of fuel available. Gas produces fewer emissions than electricity and heats water twice as quickly at 1/3 of the cost; it is at a lower price point to Solar or Hot Water Heat Pumps in installation costs; and still offers a good saving in running costs.
Installing Rinnai Infinities are a good way to upgrade your homes water pressures and move to an efficient heat source at the same time. Changing to mains pressure will give good shower pressures and speed up the delivery times to kitchen sinks and distant bathrooms. There are also bathroom and kitchen controllers available so that you can dial in the exact temperature required. Rinnai Infinities are also able to be installed internally inside a closet or up inside the roof cavity.
Often when we come to your home, initially for a quote if required, we will look at the current hot water cylinder location, look at the current shower mixer and check to see if it is capable of handling mains pressure water. Then we would look at potential LPG bottle locations around outside of home as there are many rules that apply to these locations. Then also find a central external location. For the Rinnai Infinity between the bathrooms and kitchen to maximise efficiency, it is also preferred we have good size pipework to connect within the home such as 20mm to keep up good flow rates.
As Certified Tauranga Gasfitters, we are able to give great advice on the right appliance for your needs. We offer brands that are reliable and trouble-free with a good record for after sales service Like the Rinnai Infinity Gas Calafonts for water heating. There are many that are not reliable, please listen to our experience.
If able to choose between natural gas and a meter or LPG Bottles, they have different requirements with the gas code and also different running costs.
If natural gas is available in your street you will need to be using it for water heating at least to make the line rental charges worthwhile.
