Plumbers all Hands on Deck as New Home Builds and Renovations Intensify in Tauranga

Building consent values for Mount Maunganui and Papamoa have hit a staggering $606.9 million from 2013 to date. As new homes and renovations intensify in Tauranga, the booming construction sector has seen high demand for qualified tradespeople, including plumbers, insulation companies, electricians and builders.

Thanks in part to the population influx from Auckland, there has been more than $1 billion worth of development in Tauranga's five fastest-growing suburbs over the past four years. Papamoa Beach with its ever growing number of new subdivisions, is leading the way.

Certified Builders Western Bay of Plenty president Mike Way, of Way Builders, said Papamoa is appealing for people looking to build because the flat land made the build easy and economical.

Barrett Homes national sales manager Toni Whitehorn said there had been huge growth as more Aucklanders moved to the region and ''with immigration at an all-time high''. With migration to the area expected to continue to grow, industry experts are expecting a shortfall of plumbers. Master Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers NZ chief executive officer Greg Wallace said while pressure on the plumbers was an issue nationwide, the areas of greatest concern included the Bay of Plenty.

And the pressure on plumbing companies is not just coming from new builds. With rising section prices around Tauranga putting some people off building, many locals were opting to stay in their homes and renovate. "Because the economy is doing well, people are feeling more confident in spending money on renovating their property," said Tauranga Harcourts managing director Simon Martin.

Meanwhile, established plumbing companies in Tauranga such as Eco Plumber Gas are working hard to fill any gaps and respond quickly to customer’s needs.
