Ironically, the torrential rain which hammered the Bay of Plenty recently sparked a call for Waihi residents to conserve water. Met Service figures show that since Tuesday 188.2mm of rain had doused Tauranga while 413.6mm fell at the weather station between Waihi and Whangamata.

Hauraki district Civil Defence controller Steve Fabish said Waihi residents had been asked to conserve water because heavy rain washed sediment into the water supply rivers and the treatment plant could not remove It quickly enough.

The heaviest amount of rain over the weekend fell in Tauranga at 3am on Saturday, with 10mm in just one hour. Tauranga City Council spokesman Marcel Currin said surface flooding was reported in a number of city streets while Western Bay fire crews also dealt with a handful of minor flooding callouts mainly to due to blocked drains and down pipes.

A blocked drain is a common problem that no homeowner wants to face. Fortunately, there are several preventative measures to avoid blocked drains and reduce the risk of flooding next time we have a huge rain event.

Here are just a few tips to help you prevent blocked drains in your home:

By law, all but the most basic of plumbing and drainage, gas or electrical work has to be done by a registered tradesperson. So if you have a blocked drain, it’s best to contact a professional plumber.

At Tauranga plumber Eco Plumber Gas we have specialised equipment to clear stubborn drainage blockages and we’re here 24/7 to provide drain cleaning services or drain maintenance in Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty.
